With FELLOWS, we are revolutionizing the study of literature! We turn what has traditionally been classroom contained work into an active tool to understand and confront the evolving challenges of our local communities. We ask learners (students and organizations) to dissect the narrative architecture of Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Sandra Cisneros and others in order to develop strategic solutions that are meaningful, mindful, and sustainable. By empowering learners to leverage the power of narrative to create tangible impact, we ensure our program is orientated towards transformational, not transactional, outcomes.

How FELLOWS works:

1.

Hire passionate students: Every year, we hire and compensate local high school students who are passionate about creating tangible change in their local community.

2.

Data Informed Practice: Through a month-long summer institute, we educate our Fellows on the nuances and intricacies of natural and man-made capital through a practical and professional study of literature which we refer to as "literary science". This study uses novels as "case studies" to teach students how to gather and evaluate qualitative and quantitative research from community members. By utilizing data informed by humanities studies, we aim to accurately depict the complexity of our community.

3.

Design, Refine, Execute: Fellows utilize their $10,000 budget to create social impact ventures, primarily focusing on transforming community spaces such as coffee shops, dance studios, churches, and event venues into "local laboratories." These "labs" amplify grassroots innovation, share valuable resources, and foster strong bonds among local residents. On the program's final day, fellows present their proposals for a local lab to a diverse group of stakeholders to receive valuable feedback. Throughout the academic year, fellows continue to refine and ultimately implement their ventures.
